Find the device at the internet edge

A brand guide helps you navigate a router interface, but the first router you open may not be the device connected directly to the ISP. Mesh systems, personal routers behind an ISP gateway, and access-point mode can all change which device displays the meaningful WAN address.

• Look for fields labelled WAN, Internet, Broadband, External, or IPv4 rather than the router's local admin address.
• If the WAN is private, check whether an ISP gateway or another router exists upstream before assuming CGNAT.
• If the model menus differ, use the full WAN-IP guide and then run the checker.
